Board of Public Works papers, 1837-1840.

Papers include summaries and reports concerning vouchers submitted and drafts issued by Commissioners of Public Works on Fund Commissioners for various internal improvement projects; agreements for purchase of state bonds; printed copies of 1839 chancery court proceedings to recover illegally obtained bonds; incoming and outgoing correspondence with Governor, purchasers of state bonds and Commissioners of Public Works; and reports to General Assembly and Governor. Papers also include copies of rules and ordinances passed by Board of Public Works regarding establishment of engineering districts and central office, duties of Board and each Commissioner of Public Works and salaries for Board and its employees and summary reports on construction progress of first Springfield State House and Illinois and Michigan Canal (1839).

The Board of Fund Commissioners was created by l. 1837, p. 121. Board contracted for and negotiated all loans authorized by General Assembly for internal improvements and signed and executed all bonds or stock certificates issued for such loans. Monies received from proceeds of loans were deposited at State Bank of Illinois and Bank of Illinois at Shawneetown.
